The Auratus cichlid, Melanochromis Auratus, is a freshwater fish of the cichlid family. It is also known as golden mbuna and Malawi golden cichlid. It is endemic to the southern region of Lake Malawi, particularly from Jalo Reef southward along the entire western coast down to Crocodile Rocks. This cichlid is found in rocky habitats. Auratus cichlids are small, elongate fish. Juveniles and females are bright yellow with black and white stripes on the upper half of the body. Adult male coloration is drastically different with dark brown or black body and light blue or yellow stripes on the upper half of the body. Like many other cichlids from Lake Malawi, Auratus cichlids are mouthbrooders. Females hold their fertilized eggs and fry in their mouth for a few weeks before releasing the fry.

A clear case of a hyperdominant species Melanochromis Chipokae justifies its reputation as - perhaps - the most aggressive of the mbunas. A beautiful fish with light blue horizontal stripes running along its body and a yellow edged tail. The female closely resembles the Melanochromis Auratus female the only difference being the absence of the white stripes along the black ones. Females of this species are very prolific, sometimes spawning every month. The fish is a real killer, very territorial and intolerant of its own species. When spawning it becomes ferocious and may kill any fish that challenges it. Even very aggressive species like Pseudotropheus Lombardoi and Melanochromis Auratus have a very hard time in these occasions.

Melanochromis Cyaneorhabdos formerly known as Melanochromis "maingano" or misspelled as "manigano". This species is endemic to a small region on the northeast shore of Likoma Island from Mbako Point to Membe Point, feeding on benthic invertebrates and zooplankton. Its name is descriptive for the species with cyaneo meaning "blue" and rhabdos meaning "bar". Like other Melanochromis species it has a torpedo-like body. Dark blue with lighter blue stripes adorn its body. Difference between males and females would be that the females have a light-colored belly with relatively shorter pelvic fins, while the males have dark bellies and longer pelvic fins. They are polygamous mouthbrooders.

A mbuna from near Likoma Island in Lake Malawi commonly called an exasperatus. There is some feeling that it belongs more in the genus Labidochromis than Melanochromis. The female has a silver body with orange speckles almost identical to the Labidochromis textilis. The not-so-common name for this cichlid is the "Pearl of Likoma". The joanjohnsonae are less aggressive than any other Melanochromis.

This species can be distinguished from the similar Melanochromis Cyaneorhabdos by the overall black colouration of dominant males, as opposed to the more blueish patterning of Cyaneorhabdos. Males are a variable bluish black with pale blue or royal blue stripes. The dramatically different females are orange or yellow-orange with indistinct black stripes. It is sometimes sold as "electric blue johanni" or Pseudotropheus Johannii / Johanni. Do not keep it with other Melanochromis species as they may hybridise.

Melanochromis Kaskazini can be found in the intermediate zones from rocks to sand, along the rocky coasts in the northeastern part of the lake between Nkanda and Lundu. Male kaskazini are blue, sometimes with darker horizontal bars. Females are silvery with black horizontal bars and a yellow/orange caudal fin. The kaskazini is a non-territorial mbuna that will travel all over its distribution area.

Melanochromis Perileucos formerly known as Melanochromis "black-white johannii". Melanochromis Perileucos may be distinguished from other members of this genus, except Melanochromis Elastodema, by its faded, often interrupted, horizontal stripes in males. It may be distinguished from Melanochromis Elastodema by its pale blue caudal peduncle compared with the dark blue or almost black caudal peduncle of Melanochromis Elastodema. Melanochromis Perileucos is the only Melanochromis in which females may be white.
