The BB Zebra, or Chilumba Zebra is found along the northeast coast of Malawi, from Ngara to Chirwa Island. Specimens closely resembling M. sp. ''Zebra Chilumba'' and occuring either South or East of this stretch are classified as M. fainzilberi. Males claim a cave among the rocks, which is fiercely guarded against intruders. Spawning takes place within this cave, in seclusion. Brooding females take cover among holes in the rocks.

The bumblebee cichlid, Metriaclima Crabro, is a freshwater fish of the cichlid family. It is also known as hornet cichlid. It is endemic to many regions of Lake Malawi and is found in different habitats but most frequently in large caves. The bumblebee cichlid has an elongate body with vertical yellow-and-black "bumblebee" bars. Juveniles are brightly colored but become darker when mature, especially for males. This fish is known for its ability to rapidly change its colors. They are mouth-brooders like many other cichlids from Lake Malawi. In their natural habitats, the bumblebee cichlid is a cleaner specialized in feeding on parasites from larger fish particularly the catfish Bagrus meridionalis, which apparently recognises the species as a cleaner. Notable is that Metriaclima Crabro has also been found preying upon the eggs of the Bagrus catfish, but will change color to a dark brown while doing so.

Metriaclima Daktari is found at Undu Reef, Hai Reef, and Chiwindi in Lake Malawi. There is some variation in these location variants, most noticeably the Chiwindi variant which has a lot of blue/purple coloration on the flanks. Males usually are yellow with black edges on their tail. In some populations yellow/blue or even solid light blue males are found. Females are beige or yellowish also with the black edges on the tail. Apparently "daktari" is the Swahili word for doctor.

Many of the populations of Metriaclima Zebra have OB forms occuring along with a normal color pattern. The OB males can vary dramatically, but most usually have some remnants of their vertical bars, even if faint or broken-up. Their body exhibits an overall blue sheen and the dark blotches are distributed over the entire body, including the fins. Juveniles have the normal female coloration until sexually mature. OB males and females do not aquire the black botches until at least 3 months old.
