Protomelas Ornatus is also known as Haplochromis Flavimanus, Electrochroims Ornatus or Cyrtocara Maleri Thick Lip. The enlarged lips of P. ornatus are laterally compressed as is its body. It feeds on small mbuna found in the intermediate zones as well as small invertebrates. Its laterally compressed lips are designed to seal off slits and grooves, not round holes. It therefore will turn 90-degrees before striking so as to gain access to sideways slits where prey usually seek shelter under overhanging rocks..

Also known as "Mara Rocks Sulphurhead". This species forms small feeding schools in mid-water several feet away from large boulders. Males and females feed on plankton (when available) as well as soft-bodied invertebrates that either fall in or are washed into the water. Territories are defended in the open water.

This highly desirable species has many names. Among them Protomelas Steveni Taiwan Tanzania and Taiwan Reef Steveni. It appears to me the most appropriate name is Protomelas Steveni Taiwan Reef. This is due mainly to the fact that Protomelas Fenestratus is the name for a close relative the Tangerine Tiger. That species has a lot more vertical bars as the common name implies. A more famous close relative is an old favorite the Red Empress (Protomelas Taeniolatus). Protomelas Steveni Taiwan Reef is often observed at Taiwanee Reef just north of Chizumulu Island as well as Mbamba Bay and Mbamba (Ngkuyo) Bay and Higga Reef in Tanzania. Found only over rocky areas with very clear water.

Protomelas Taeniolatus is commonly called the "Red Empress." There are a few variants of this species, including a blue morph from Makanjila Point called "Blue Fire." Of the Red Empress variety, there are two classes. One morph has been "line-bred" in Europe for substantially more red color and consequently has been dubbed the "Super Red Empress." The other Red Empress morph is the American strain and has more blue color than the Super Red Empress.
